Choosing the right frame and size

The frame decides how a work sits in a room. Too heavy and it fights the image; too light and the work floats away from the wall. Every Leo Martelli work uses the same construction: gallery-grade matte paper (200 gsm), a wood frame and plexiglass. It arrives ready to hang. What changes is the colour of the wood.

Black frame. The sharpest edge. It gives the darker works a hard outline and holds its own on a pale wall.

White frame. The quietest choice. It suits light rooms and lets the monochrome works breathe.

Natural wood frame. Warm and light. It sits well with oak floors, linen and daylight.

Dark wood frame. Warm and deep. It belongs with walnut, leather and lamp light.

Size. 40×50 for a corridor. 50×70 for a room. 70×100 for a point. Sizes are the framed size. A 40×50 works in a pair or a trio, or on a desk wall. A 50×70 sits above a console, a bed or a sofa. A 70×100 is one work on one wall.

Hanging. A common rule is to hang the centre of the work at about 145 cm from the floor; the size guide shows each size against a door and a figure. Every work is supplied ready to hang, and its weight and size are shown on the product page. You are responsible for choosing a fixing and a wall suitable for the weight.
